After finally hitting the pillow around 1 a.m., we were up and at ‘em at 4:30 a.m. to achieve our goal of a 5 a.m. departure for Schiphol. I should have paid attention to the clues that I was getting when we checked in at the airport. The day was NOT going to go smoothly--British Airways would not check our bags through to Salt Lake and Munich, two of our bags were overweight and when we arrived at Heathrow, we had to reclaim our bags and recheck and go through security AGAIN! Plus, we had to change terminals to get from British Airways to American for the trip to Salt Lake. Security would not allow me to accompany Jennifer, Jack and Peter to their gate, so we had to say our goodbyes without knowing whether they made it to the gate safely, and their flight departed on time.
Well, apparently their flight did not depart on time, and they missed their connection to Salt Lake. Wendy called me at 2 a.m. to ask what she should do. I gave them some instructions on things to try and waited for her call. She didn’t call back so I assumed that all was arranged. Three novice travelers stuck in Dallas and American wanted to charge them $50 each for a hotel room and didn’t give them any assurances that they would fly out the next day.
Wendy called a neighbor who used to live in Dallas. He made arrangements for an LDS family to pick up Jennifer, Jack and Peter so that they had a safe place to spend the night and then put them on a plane the next morning back to Salt Lake. Whew!
